What is attachment?
Attachment refers to a lasting, two-way emotional connection between two people, typically a parent and child, that develops gradually over time. This bond becomes evident when infants display stranger anxiety (becoming distressed around unfamiliar people) and separation protest (distress when separated from their primary caregiver).
The attachment bond is not present from birth. Instead, it develops through consistent interactions between the caregiver and infant. This special relationship provides the infant with a sense of security and is usually formed with the mother, although anyone who offers comfort and security can become an attachment figure.
Key types of caregiver-infant interactions
Communication between carers and infants is sophisticated and occurs in several distinct ways that help build and strengthen attachment bonds:
Interactional synchrony
Interactional synchrony involves infants coordinating their body movements to match the rhythm and pattern of their carer's speech and behaviour. This synchronised interaction, where both parties move in harmony, serves to reinforce the developing attachment bond. It's like a carefully choreographed dance between carer and infant.
Reciprocity
Reciprocity describes the back-and-forth exchange of similar behaviours between carer and infant. Bodily contact

Infants appear to possess an innate ability to copy their carer's facial expressions and gestures. This biological capacity suggests that babies are naturally equipped with mechanisms that facilitate attachment formation from a very early age.
Caregiverese
Adults naturally modify their speech when communicating with infants, using what researchers call caregiverese (also known as 'motherese' or 'baby talk'). This involves speaking in a higher pitch, using song-like intonation, speaking slowly, and being repetitive. This modified communication style helps facilitate interaction between carer and infant and supports attachment development.

Condon & Sander (1974) - Interactional synchrony
Research Study: Evidence for Interactional Synchrony
Aim: To investigate whether infants coordinate their movements with adult speech patterns. Method: Frame-by-frame video analysis of infant movements during adult interactions. Findings: Infants coordinated their body movements with the rhythm of adult speech, creating turn-taking conversation patterns. Isabella et al. (1989) - Secure attachment and synchrony

Evaluation
Strengths:

- Supporting evidence: De Chateau & Wiberg (1984) replicated Klaus & Kennell's findings with middle-class Swedish mothers, providing cross-cultural support for the importance of early physical contact.

Limitations:

- Cultural variations: Interactional synchrony is not found in all cultures, which weakens claims that it's essential for attachment formation. Le Vine et al. (1994) found that Kenyan mothers have minimal physical contact or interactions with their infants, yet these infants still develop secure attachments.
- Overgeneralisation of caregiverese: Adults use modified speech patterns with all infants, not just those they have attachments with, suggesting it may aid general communication rather than specifically forming attachments.
Stages of attachment development
Schaffer (1996) identified that infant attachment development follows a predictable pattern that can be divided into several distinct stages. Understanding these stages helps explain how the caregiver-infant interactions described above contribute to the formation of secure attachment bonds over time.
