Question 4
Outline processes leading to the formation of kames.
Step 1
Answer
Kames are formed through a series of fluvio-glacial depositional processes. They consist of sand and gravel deposits which accumulate as a result of glacial activity.
When glaciers melt, meltwater flows and carries sediment, which can create delta formations on valley floors. Specifically, kames are formed when this meltwater deposits sand and gravel in mounds, particularly at the edges of glaciers.
Additionally, when a moraine dams a lake created by melting glaciers, sediment can settle and lead to the formation of kames on the valley floor.
Kame terraces can also develop along the sides of glacial valleys, resulting from glacial meltwater depositing materials as it flows down the valley sides.
