Eysenck proposed a theory that highlights the role of biological factors in shaping personality traits and their connection to criminal or anti-social behaviour. He argued that individuals with certain personality types, especially those identified as extroverted, may have a predisposition towards these behaviours.

According to Eysenck, the reticular activating system (RAS) of extroverts is often under-aroused. As a result, these individuals may engage in anti-social behaviour to increase their arousal levels, as they seek more stimulation from their environment. This need for stimulation can lead to impulsive and potentially criminal actions.

Additionally, Eysenck noted that the sympathetic nervous system, which is part of the autonomic nervous system, may be more active for longer periods in individuals predisposed to anti-social behaviour. This heightened activity contributes to impulsive behaviour, further increasing the likelihood of engaging in criminal acts.
