V=R2(R1+R2Vsource)
where:
Vsource=6.0V (the battery voltage)
R1=10Ω (fixed resistor)
R2 is the resistance of the variable resistor.
As R2 varies from 0Ω to 40Ω, we can calculate the voltmeter reading at R2=40Ω:
V=10Ω(10Ω+40Ω6.0V)=10Ω(50Ω6.0V)=1.2V
