Answer
Carbon dioxide and silicon dioxide are composed of atoms, while magnesium oxide is made up of ions. Silicon dioxide and magnesium oxide exhibit giant structures, but carbon dioxide consists of small molecules with weak intermolecular forces.
All three compounds have strong bonds.
Carbon dioxide and silicon dioxide are formed from two non-metals (covalent bonds), where electrons are shared.
Magnesium oxide is formed from a metal (magnesium) and a non-metal (oxygen) resulting in ionic bonds where electrons are transferred from magnesium to oxygen (two electrons are transferred).
In silicon dioxide, each silicon forms four bonds (tetrahedral geometry), while in carbon dioxide, there are double bonds between carbon and oxygen.
