The plum pudding model suggested that atoms are composed of a diffuse positive charge with electrons scattered throughout. However, the alpha particle scattering experiment demonstrated that some alpha particles were deflected, which indicated that an atom has a dense, positively charged nucleus surrounded by electrons. This led to the current nuclear model, which shows most of the mass concentrated in the nucleus and that atoms are mostly empty space.
