Isotopes are variants of a particular chemical element which differ in neutron number, and consequently in nucleon number. They have the same number of protons (which defines the element) but different mass numbers due to the difference in the number of neutrons. For example, if Element E has an atomic number of 5, it has 5 protons. The isotopes will have 5 protons as well, but one isotope may have 5 neutrons (mass number 10) and another may have 6 neutrons (mass number 11).
