When a nickel atom loses two electrons to form a nickel ion (Ni²⁺), its electron configuration changes from 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 3d⁸ 4s² to 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 3d⁸. The loss of these two outermost electrons leads to a positively charged ion.
