To demonstrate that the rod is charged, you could bring the charged rod near some small pieces of paper. If the rod is charged, the paper pieces will be attracted to the rod, moving towards it. You could also bring the rod close to a stream of water, and observe that the stream bends towards the rod, indicating the presence of an electric charge.
