1.2.5 Atom Economy

Percentage Atom Economy

Atom economy measures the efficiency of a reaction by calculating how much of the reactants end up as the desired product. Higher atom economy is desirable for environmental, economic, and ethical reasons, as it reduces waste and maximises resource use.

Percentage Atom Economy=Molecular mass of desired productSum of molecular masses of all reactants×100\text{Percentage Atom Economy} = \frac{\text{Molecular mass of desired product}}{\text{Sum of molecular masses of all reactants}} \times 100
infoNote

Example: In the production of water from hydrogen and oxygen:

2H2+O2→2H2O2H_2 + O_2 \rightarrow 2H_2O

The desired product is water, so the atom economy would be:

Mr(H2O)Ă—2Mr(H2)Ă—2+Mr(O2)Ă—100\frac{M_r(H_2O) \times 2}{M_r(H_2) \times 2 + M_r(O_2)} \times 100 =18Ă—22Ă—2+32Ă—100=:success[100= \frac{18 \times 2}{2 \times 2 + 32} \times 100 = :success[100%]

This reaction has 100% atom economy as all reactants form the desired product.

Importance of High Atom Economy

Developing chemical processes with high atom economy offers:

  • Economic advantages: Less waste means lower costs for disposal and materials.
  • Environmental benefits: Reduces the production of harmful by-products and conserves resources.
  • Ethical considerations: Supports sustainable practices, reducing the environmental footprint of industrial processes.
