Context

● Clays Lane Estate was a high housing co-operative development built in 1977, creating a community for vulnerable single people in Newham ● But, the site was designated for the Olympic Athletes' village and the 430 residents were forced to move ○ Some residents were displaced without new homes to go to ● There was huge public opposition and even public inquiries ● Several small businesses were also evicted from the Olympic site eg. Foreman's Salmon smokery

Impacts on Quality of Life

● 4964 jobs were removed from the area of the Park to make way for the Olympics. ● Newham is where one in four families live in overcrowded properties and which in 2015 had over 16,000 households on its housing waiting list. ● The redevelopment of the Lea river decontaminated the land, improving local health, and made a once derelict inaccessible area a pleasant and attractive place to be.
