Blood Brothers: Plot Summary

Blood Brothers by Willy Russell follows the lives of twin brothers, Mickey and Edward, who are separated at birth due to their mother's poverty. Mrs. Johnstone, their mother, is persuaded by the wealthy Mrs. Lyons to give up one of her sons to be raised as her own. The boys grow up in vastly different social classes—Mickey in a working-class environment, and Edward in a privileged, middle-class household. Despite their different upbringings, they become best friends, unaware of their true relationship.

As they grow older, the differences in their circumstances become more pronounced. Mickey struggles with unemployment, depression, and crime, while Edward enjoys a comfortable life. Both fall in love with the same woman, Linda, leading to further tension. The play culminates in tragedy when Mickey, driven by jealousy and despair, confronts Edward with a gun. In the ensuing chaos, both brothers are killed, fulfilling the "superstition" that if twins separated at birth learn of their relationship, they will die. The play ends with Mrs. Johnstone lamenting the loss of her sons, highlighting the devastating impact of class and fate.
