Hobson's Choice: Plot Summary

In Hobson's Choice, Henry Hobson, a stubborn boot shop owner in 1880s Salford, rules over his three daughters, Alice, Vickey, and Maggie, with an iron hand. He refuses to pay them wages and sees Maggie, the eldest, as too old to marry. However, Maggie, intelligent and determined, defies her father by proposing to Willie Mossop, a shy but talented bootmaker in the shop. Together, Maggie and Willie leave to start their own business, which quickly thrives. Meanwhile, Hobson's business begins to fail due to his poor management and excessive drinking.

As Hobson's health and finances crumble, he is forced to turn to Maggie and Willie for help. By the play's end, Willie has grown into a confident man and a skilled businessman, and Hobson must accept their success and their terms.
