Theravada, often considered the "School of the Elders," is one of the oldest forms of Buddhism. It focuses on the teachings of the historical Buddha, emphasizing individual enlightenment through self-discipline, meditation, and insight. The ultimate goal is to achieve Nibbana, the cessation of suffering.
Mahayana, known as the "Great Vehicle," is a later development in Buddhism that emphasizes the collective journey towards enlightenment. Mahayana Buddhists aim not only for their own enlightenment but also for the enlightenment of all beings. They believe in the potential for everyone to become a Buddha and place great importance on compassion and altruism.
Theravada Buddhists devote their lives to achieving enlightenment and ultimately reaching Nibbana (the ultimate goal of liberation from the cycle of birth and death). A significant number of them become monks and nuns, dedicating themselves fully to this spiritual path. In Theravada belief, the human personality is composed of what are known as the Five Aggregates (skandhas), which are collections or groups that define our existence.
