Carol Ann Duffy - Birth

Carol Ann Duffy was born on December 23, 1955, in the Gorbals, Glasgow, Scotland. She was the first child of May and Frank Duffy, with May having Irish heritage, and Frank having Irish grandparents. When she was six years old, her family moved to Stafford, England.

Carol Ann Duffy - Life and Career

Duffy's passion for reading and writing was nurtured by her English teachers and the poet-artist Adrian Henri. She pursued higher education, graduating in Philosophy from the University of Liverpool in 1977. During the 1970s, she published several poetry collections and gained recognition through awards like the National Poetry Competition and the Somerset Maugham Award. In 1996, she became a lecturer in poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her notable works include "Standing Female Nude," "Selling Manhattan," and "Mean Time."

In 2009, Carol Ann Duffy made history by becoming the first female and first Scottish Poet Laureate. During her tenure, she emphasised the importance of poetry in national life. Beyond poetry, she also ventured into playwriting and served as an editor for anthologies.
