English Language Assessment Levels

Level	Marks	Description	Guidance
Level 6	11–12	A skilled analysis demonstrating a sophisticated appreciation of how language and structure are used to achieve effects and influence the reader. Analysis of both language and structure is consistent and detailed.	Responses must show a precise understanding of both language and structure, with carefully integrated subject terminology.
Level 5	9–10	A perceptive analysis showing a clear understanding of how language and structure are used to achieve effects and influence the reader. Both language and structure are reasonably detailed and balanced.	Responses should be well-organised and use subject terminology effectively to explain the effects on the reader.
Level 4	7–8	A developed explanation showing secure understanding of how language and structure are used to achieve effects and influence the reader. Commentary on both language and structure, but may not be fully balanced.	Relevant terminology should be used to support the explanation. The analysis may focus more on one aspect (language or structure).
Level 3	5–6	A clear explanation showing a general understanding of how language and structure are used to achieve effects and influence the reader. The explanation may not cover both language and structure in detail.	Some use of relevant subject terminology to support ideas, but the response may be less detailed.
Level 2	3–4	A straightforward commentary showing some understanding of how language and structure achieve effects and influence the reader. Likely to focus on either language or structure more than the other.	Some use of subject terminology, though it may not always be relevant or fully integrated into the explanation.
Level 1	1–2	A descriptive response showing limited awareness of how language and structure achieve effects and influence the reader. Little or no use of subject terminology.	The response is largely descriptive, without much analysis or understanding of how language and structure affect the reader.
Level 0	0	No response or no response worthy of credit.	No relevant response.

Question 3 Guidance:

Credit answers that make clear connections between how language and structure are used to persuade the reader.
Higher-level responses will show a precise and integrated understanding of language and structure and their effects on the reader.
Responses should focus on the writer's deliberate use of techniques, such as metaphors, repetition, lexical fields, and shifts in pronouns, to create effects and influence the reader.
Responses should make a reasonable balance between language and structure analysis, as imbalanced responses cannot achieve the higher levels.
