Answer
Gold alloys are stronger than pure gold primarily due to the arrangement and interaction of different metal atoms within the alloy. In pure gold, the metal atoms are arranged in a regular, closely packed structure, which allows them to slide past each other easily. This malleability makes pure gold soft.
When other metals, like copper or silver, are added to gold, they disrupt this regular arrangement. The presence of different sized atoms creates a barrier to the movement of dislocations within the crystal structure of the gold alloy. As a result, the alloy becomes harder and more resistant to deformation. This phenomenon, known as solid solution strengthening, is key to the increased strength observed in gold alloys compared to pure gold.
