What is a Family?
- A family is a group of people connected by:
- Blood (e.g., parents and siblings)
- Marriage
- Other special relationships like adoption or fostering
Types of Families
- Nuclear Family
- Made up of parents and their child/children
- Parents may or may not be married
- One-Parent Family
- Made up of one parent (mother or father) and their child/children
- Blended Family
- Includes two parents and their children from previous relationships
- They may also have children together
- Extended Family
- A larger group that includes:
- Grandparents
- Aunts, uncles, cousins
- Parents and children
Factors That Influence Family Life
1. Economic Influences
- Irish economy improving: Some families now enjoy a better standard of living (e.g., affording holidays).
- Low-income families:
- Still face financial struggles.
- May need teenagers to work part-time to help out.
- High costs (e.g., housing, childcare, education):
- Leads to stress and pressure on young families.
2. Cultural Influences
- Culture and religion:
- Different values can cause conflict between teens and parents.
- Urban vs. rural living:
- Rural areas may offer fewer job opportunities, increasing dependence on parents.
- Local traditions:
- E.g., GAA culture influences hobbies in rural areas.
- Social media:
- Reduces face-to-face family time and communication.
