Véarsa 1
-
Feicimid go bhfuil an spailpín tinn tuirseach den saol atá á caitheamh aige agus é beo bocht ar fad.
- We see that the spailpín is sick and tired tired of the life he is living and that he is living in poverty.
-
Deireann sé go bhfuil sé ag brath go huile is go hiomlán ar a shláinte chun maireachtáil, 'ag seasamh ar mo shláinte'.
- He says that he is completely dependent on his health to survive.
-
Buailtear tinn é go minic, ' 's ag bailiú galair ráithe' .
- He often gets sick.
-
Cinnte, níl saol easca aige- caithfidh sé éirí go luath gach maidin agus siúl tríd an fhéir fliuch ag lorg oibre, ' ag siúl an drúchta go moch ar maidin'__.
- Certainly, he does not have an easy life-he has to get up early every morning and walk through the wet grass looking for work.
-
Is léir go bhfuil sé bréan den shaol dian atá aige agus go bhfuil fearg mhór air go gcaithfidh sé dul ag sclábhaíocht do dhaoine eile.
- It is clear that he is sick of the tough life that he has and that he is furious that he has to slave away for other people.
-
I gcás an spailpín, teastaíonn uaidh dul ag troid leis na 'Croppies' san éirí amach in aghaidh éagóir na Sasnach.
- In the case of the spailpín, he wants to fight with the 'Croppies' in the rising against the injustice of the English.
Véarsa 2
-
Féicimid gur chaith an spailpín a laethanta ag dul ó áit go háit ag lorg oibre.
- We see that the spailpín spent his days going from place to place looking for work.
-
Mar shampla, siúlann sé ó 'Chluain Meala' go 'Tiobraid Árainn'.
- For example, he walks from Clonmel to Tipperary.
-
Oibríonn sé gan stad gan staonadh- oibríonn sé go dian dicheallach.
- He works very hard.
-
Ach, i gcás an spailpín, is léir gur oibrí maith é agus go bhfuil sé brodúil as an obair a dhéanann sé.
- But, in the case of the spailpín, it is clear that he is a good worker and that he is proud of the work that he does.
-
Ceapann sé go bhfuil sé níos fearr ná einne eile ach, toisc go bhfuil sé bocht, níl aon rogha aige ach dul ag obair leis na bodairí seo, 'i gCallain go dlúth 's mo shúiste im ghlaic/ ag dul chun tosaigh ceard leo'.
- He thinks that he is better than everyone else but, as he is poor, he has no choice but to go and work with these 'bodairí'.
-
Tá saol agus cás truamhéalach ag an spailpín- cé gur oibrí maith é, níl meas madra ag na feirmeoirí nó aon duine eile air, 'Sin chu'ibh an spailpín fánach'.
- The spailpín has a miserable life and situation- even though he is a good worker, neither the farmers nor anyone else have respect for him.
Véarsa 3
-
I véarsa a trí, cuireann an file saol agus cás an spailpín ós ár gcomhair arís. Bíonn ar an spailpín suí cois balla, ag fanacht ar thairiscint oibre ó bhodaire ar chapaill, 'ná ar mhargadh na saoire im shuí cois balla'.
- In the third verse, the poet presents us with the life and situation of the spailpín again. The spailpín has to sit by the wall, waiting for a job offer from 'bodairí' on horses.
-
Faighimid léargas brónach ar chás an spailpín, 'ag díol ná ag reic mo shláinte'.
- We get a sad insight into the spailpín's situation, as he sells his health.
-
Tá meafair láidir sa líne seo- feicimid íomhá truamhéalach den spailpín bocht agus é ag íobairt a shlainte ar mhaithe le pá lae ar nós is gur earra le trádáil a bhí ann.
- There is a strong metaphor in this line - we see a pitiful image of the poor spailpín as he sacrifices his health for a day's wages as if he were a commodity to be traded.
-
Braithimid an t-uaigneas agus an easpa díníte a bhaineann lena shaol. Feicimid an chodarsnacht idir a shaol agus saol na bhfeirmeoirí saibhre 'ar a gcapaill'.
- We feel the loneliness and the lack of dignity associated with his life. We see the contrast between his life and the life of the rich farmers 'on their horses'.
-
Tá an spailpín seo bréan bailithe den dúshaothrú, den shaol agus den chás.
- This spailpín is sick of the exploitation, the life and the situation.
-
Áfach, ag deireadh an lae, glacann an spailpín a chinniúint agus leanann sé an feirmeoir chuig an chéad post eile. Bíonn ar leanúint ar aghaidh, ag fulaingt agus ag streachailt ó lá go lá.
- However, at the end of the day, the spailpín accepts his fate and follows the farmer to the next job. He has to continue on, suffering and struggling day by day.
