The General’s impassioned speech was followed by an uneasy silence. Each man had really become absorbed in his own life – in his own fears and hopes. The atmosphere was tense – like a taut rope. Suddenly Mugo stood up, trembling, in the tension of a sudden decision.  
‘That cannot be,’ he said. ‘I cannot be Gikonyo and be a traitor. I am not a fit man to lead. The Party should look elsewhere for a leader.’  
His voice was choked. He struggled to bring out another word, and then unexpectedly rushed out.
