Essay Structure

What is an Essay?

An essay is a structured piece of writing that presents an argument, narrative, or description in a clear and logical format. It consists of three main sections: the introduction, the body, and the conclusion.

Key Features of a Well-Structured Essay:

✔ Logical Organisation – The ideas must flow in a structured and coherent manner.

✔ Clear Paragraphing – Each section serves a distinct purpose.

✔ Formal Tone – Appropriate language and structure should be maintained.

✔ Relevance to Topic – Every part of the essay must contribute to the main idea.

2. Body

  • Consists of at least three paragraphs.
  • Each paragraph contains one main idea supported by examples, facts, or explanations.
  • Uses linking words (e.g., furthermore, however, consequently) to create a smooth flow between ideas.

3. Conclusion

  • Summarise the key points discussed in the body.
  • Reinforces the main argument without introducing new information.
  • Leaves the reader with a strong final thought or reflection.
