VVVolume
ccConcentration

2. Essential Chemical Equations

Mole Calculations

n=mMn = \frac{m}{M}

Where:

  • n=n = Number of moles
  • m=m = Mass (g)(g)
  • M=M = Molar mass (gmol1)(g·mol⁻¹) c=nVc = \frac{n}{V}

Where:

  • c=c = Concentration (moldm3)(mol·dm⁻³)
  • V=V = Volume (dm3)(dm³) c=mMVc = \frac{m}{MV}

Where:

  • MV=MV = Molar volume (dm3mol1)(dm³·mol⁻¹)

Ideal Gas Law

PV=nRTPV = nRT

Where:

  • P=P = Pressure (Pa)(Pa)
  • V=V = Volume (m3)(m³)
  • n=n = Number of moles
  • R=R = Gas constant (8.31Jmol1K1)(8.31 J·mol⁻¹·K⁻¹)
  • T=T = Temperature (K)(K)

Chemical Equilibrium Expression

For a reaction:

2P+3R25+4T2P + 3R \rightleftharpoons 25 + 4T

The equilibrium constant (Ke)(Kₑ) is given by:

Kc=[S]x[T]y[P]z[R]wK_c = \frac{[S]^{x} [T]^{y}}{[P]^{z} [R]^{w}}

Where [ ] represents the concentration of each substance in moldm3mol·dm⁻³.

3. Key Notes

  • Subscripts in chemical formulas show the number of atoms (e.g. H₂O means 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom).
  • Balanced equations are necessary when using stoichiometric calculations.
