10 cards from this deck

Show

Meaning of large KeqK_{eq} (>10³)

Equilibrium lies right, products strongly favoured

Meaning of small KeqK_{eq} (<10⁻³)

Equilibrium lies left, reactants strongly favoured

Meaning of KeqK_{eq} between 0.1 and 10

Both reactants and products present in significant amounts

Reaction quotient (QQ) definition

Same form as KeqK_{eq}, calculated at any point in reaction

When Q=KeqQ = K_{eq}

System at equilibrium, no net change

Direction when Q<KeqQ < K_{eq}

Forward reaction favoured, shifts right to make products

Direction when Q>KeqQ > K_{eq}

Reverse reaction favoured, shifts left to make reactants

Two main applications of KeqK_{eq}

Check if at equilibrium; calculate unknown concentrations

Memory aid for Q<KeqQ < K_{eq}

Q too low? Forward we go!

Importance of stoichiometry in equilibrium

Use balanced equation to relate concentrations of species
