Venn diagram definition

Visual tool showing sets and relationships using circles

Universal set (UU) representation

Rectangle containing all possible elements

A∩BA \cap B meaning

Intersection - elements in both sets

A∪BA \cup B meaning

Union - elements in either set or both

A‾\overline{A} meaning

Complement - elements not in A but in universal set

Cardinality of a set

Number of elements it contains

Cardinality rule for union

∣A∪B∣=∣A∣+∣B∣−∣A∩B∣|A \cup B| = |A| + |B| - |A \cap B|

Why subtract ∣A∩B∣|A \cap B| in cardinality rule?

To avoid double-counting shared elements

Intersection logical operator

AND - element must be in both sets

Union logical operator

OR - element in either set or both
