Show

Synaptic plasticity

Changes at synapses that strengthen/weaken neural connections

Glutamate's role in synaptic plasticity

Excitatory neurotransmitter that stimulates activity & connectivity

Long-term potentiation (LTP)

Permanent strengthening of synaptic connections via repeated use

Long-term depression (LTD)

Permanent weakening of synaptic connections from low activation

Purpose of LTD

Prune unused connections & allocate brain resources efficiently

How LTP & LTD work together

LTP strengthens new pathways; LTD weakens old/inefficient ones

Sprouting

Growth of axon & dendrite fibres at synapse

Synaptogenesis

Creation of new synapses between neurons

Rerouting

Formation of new neural connections for alternative pathways

Synaptic pruning

Removal of excess synapses to increase transmission efficiency
