1.4.6 Maths Skill: Using a Tangent to Find Initial Rate of Reaction

To calculate the initial rate of reaction from a graph, you can use a tangent to the curve at the starting point of the reaction. This is especially useful in enzyme kinetics where reaction rates change over time.

Steps to Find the Initial Rate:

  1. Plot the Data: Draw a graph of product concentration (y-axis) against time (x-axis).
  2. Identify the Initial Point: Locate the point at the start of the reaction (usually where time = 0).
  3. Draw a Tangent: At this initial point, draw a straight line that just touches the curve. This line should represent the slope of the curve at the very beginning of the reaction.
  4. Calculate the Slope: Find the slope of the tangent by using two points on the line. Use the formula:
Rate of Reaction=change in ychange in x\text{Rate of Reaction} = \frac{\text{change in y}}{\text{change in x}}

where change in y\text{change in y} is the change in product concentration and change in x\text{change in x} is the change in time.

Example: If the tangent line rises by 0.5 units on the y-axis over 10 seconds on the x-axis, then:

Rate of Reaction=0.510=0.05 units per second\text{Rate of Reaction} = \frac{0.5}{10} = 0.05 \, \text{units per second}

Why Use a Tangent?

  • The tangent represents the instantaneous rate at the very start of the reaction, before any factors like substrate depletion or product buildup affect the rate.
  • The initial rate of reaction is often the highest rate observed and provides insights into enzyme activity under optimal conditions.
