Don Paterson: A British Poet and Musician

Early Life and Musical Career

Don Paterson was born in Dundee, Scotland, in 1963. He left school at the age of 16 and initially pursued a career in music. After moving to London in 1984, he began taking guitar lessons from Derek Bailey and went on to work as a jazz guitarist. He found success with the jazz-folk ensemble Lammas, which he formed with saxophonist Tim Garland in 1989. Lammas toured extensively in Europe and Asia, recording five albums. Paterson also worked as a music teacher and continued to perform as a jazz guitarist throughout his career.

Literary Career

Don Paterson's literary journey was inspired by his encounter with poet Tony Harrison, leading him to shift his focus to poetry. He spent a year reading extensively before starting to write and publish poetry. His debut poetry collection, "Nil Nil," was published in 1993, receiving critical acclaim and winning the Forward Prize for Best First Collection.

In 1994, he was named one of the "New Generation Poets" by the Poetry Society. Paterson's second collection, "God's Gift to Women" (1997), earned him the T.S. Eliot Prize and the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize. He went on to win the Whitbread Poetry Award and a second T.S. Eliot Prize for "Landing Light" (2003).
