To charge the electroscope, first, take a charged object, such as a rubbed balloon or a plastic rod, and directly touch it to the metal knob or plate of the electroscope. This allows electrons to transfer between the charged object and the electroscope, resulting in the electroscope acquiring the same type of charge as the object.

Bring charged object close and earth electroscope
Answer
Alternatively, you can bring the charged object close to the knob of the electroscope without touching it. This will induce a charge separation within the electroscope. To permanently charge the electroscope, touch the base of the electroscope with your hand (earth it) while keeping the charged object near. This allows excess electrons to flow to or from your hand, allowing the electroscope to retain the charge after the object is removed.
