What is the Cartesian Plane?

The Cartesian Plane is like a map that helps us find the location of points. It's made up of two lines:

  • The x$$-axis: This is the horizontal line that goes left and right.
  • The y$$-axis: This is the vertical line that goes up and down. These two lines meet at a special point called the origin. The origin is at (0,00, 0), where both the x$$-axis and y$$-axis cross each other.

How Do We Describe a Point?

To describe a point on this plane, we use two numbers called coordinates. These coordinates are written in brackets like this: (x,y)(x, y). Here's what they mean:

  • x:x: The first number tells us how far to move left or right from the origin.
  • y:y: The second number tells us how far to move up or down.

  • The point (3,2)(3, 2) means:

  • Start at the origin (0,0)(0, 0).

  • Move 33 steps to the right (because 33 is positive).

  • Then move 22 steps up (because 22 is positive). So, the point (3,2)(3, 2) is 33 steps right and 22 steps up from the origin.

  • The point (4,1)(-4, 1) means:

  • Start at the origin (0,0)(0, 0).

  • Move 44 steps to the left (because 4-4 is negative).

  • Then move 11 step up (because 11 is positive). So, the point (4,1)(-4, 1) is 44 steps left and 11 step up from the origin.

How to Plot Points on the Cartesian Plane

When you want to plot (or draw) a point on the Cartesian Plane, follow these simple steps:

  1. Start at the Origin (0,0)(0, 0): Always begin at the origin, where the xaxisx-axis and yaxisy-axis cross.
  2. Look at the xcoordinatex-coordinate: This is the first number. If it's positive, move to the right. If it's negative, move to the left. Don't move up or down yet, just go left or right.
  3. Look at the ycoordinatey-coordinate: This is the second number. If it's positive, move up. If it's negative, move down. Start from where you stopped in step 22, and now go up or down.
  4. Mark the Point: After moving according to the xx and yy coordinates, place a dot to mark your point. Label it with the coordinates so you remember where it is.

Example: Plotting a Point Let's plot the point (4,3)(4, -3):

  • Step 1: Start at the origin (0,0)(0, 0).
  • Step 2: Move 44 steps to the right (because 4 4 is positive).
  • Step 3: From there, move 33 steps down (because 3-3 is negative).
  • Step 4: Mark the point and label it (4,3)(4, -3).

  • Check the Signs: Positive numbers mean right or up, while negative numbers mean left or down.
  • Go One Step at a Time: Always move along the xaxisx-axis first (left or right) before moving along the yaxisy-axis (up or down).
  • Be Neat: Label your points clearly and try to keep your lines straight when moving along the axes.
