Lactation Definition:

• Lactation is the secretion of milk by the mammary glands.
• The breasts produce a thick yellow fluid called colostrum for the first few days after birth.
• This fluid is high in protein, minerals, and antibodies.

Hormonal Control of Lactation:

• During pregnancy, progesterone inhibits milk production.
• After birth, the levels of progesterone decrease, and the hormone prolactin is produced.
  • Prolactin is produced by the pituitary gland.
  • Prolactin stimulates milk production.
  • Prolactin continues to be produced as long as the baby breastfeeds.
