Photosynthesis uses light energy, water, carbon dioxide, and chlorophyll to produce glucose and oxygen. The process takes place in the chloroplast and supports life by producing energy for plants and oxygen for other organisms.
There are four requirements for photosynthesis:
Photosynthesis is an anabolic reaction. It requires energy, which comes from sunlight.
Anabolic reaction: the use of smaller molecules to form larger molecules e.g. photosynthesis, protein synthesis.
Osmosis: the movement of water molecules from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration across a semi-permeable membrane.
Diffusion: the movement of substances from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What is the difference between chloroplast and chlorophyll? Chloroplast: The structure where photosynthesis happens.
Chlorophyll: The green pigment inside chloroplasts that captures light energy.
Key Tip: Remember, the chloroplast acts like a factory: chlorophyll captures sunlight, and carbon dioxide and water are the raw materials it uses to make food (glucose).
