Leaving Cert: Higher Level French Exam Question
2009, Q4a
Global warming? Don't worry. It's not a serious problem yet.
Give your reactions.
This type of question is common in the Leaving Cert French exam. You're shown an illustration and asked to express your thoughts. So, how do you approach the question?
Identify what the examiners are looking for
• A variety of verbs, correctly conjugated in tenses like passé composé, imparfait, présent, futur, and conditionnel. Accurate conjugation is crucial. When in doubt, keep it simple. • Relevant vocabulary for the theme. • Use of French idioms. • Use of reflexive verbs and pronouns. • Your response must address the question that appears on the paper- you cannot learn off answers and recite them word for word.
Preparation:
Brainstorm vocabulary and phrases related to climate change. This topic is increasingly relevant and is likely to appear in your exam.
Plan:
• Introduction: Address the question immediately. Here, we are asked to give our reaction to an image. Let's start with a statement, giving our first impression of the piece. • Paragraph 1: Discuss the current reality of climate change, including how human actions contribute and its effects. • Paragraph 2: Outline what actions we can take to reduce climate change. Then, outline what actions the government can take. • Conclusion: Keep it brief, one to two sentences. Use the subjonctif to demonstrate your language skills and conclude with a strong statement related to the theme.
Ma réaction immédiate à cette illustration est de dire que je suis furieuse quand je lis des mots. J'irais jusqu'à dire que le réchauffement climatique est la question la plus importante à laquelle nous sommes confrontés. Cet homme ne comprend pas que le changement climatique menace l'avenir de la planète.
My immediate reaction to this illustration is to say that I am furious when I read words. I would go so far as to say that global warming is the most important issue we are facing. This man does not understand that climate change threatens the future of the planet.
These days, there are those who use single-use bottles, disposable plates and plastic straws. It should make us hang our heads in shame. Because of fossil fuels, the ozone layer, which is supposed to protect us from harmful sun rays, has holes in it. This leads to serious consequences. The ice is melting, animals, like the polar bear, are losing their habitat. Desertification, deforestation, and the greenhouse effect are big problems nowadays. Do not forget the forest fires that have blazed across Europe last summer.
D'après moi, nous devons faire des petits changements. J'essaie de prendre le transport en commun pour réduire mon empreinte carbone. Nous devons utiliser de l'énergie propre et renouvelable. Le gouvernement doit introduire des lois contre les plastiques à usages uniques. Il faut sensibiliser les gens à cette menace réelle.
In my opinion, we must make small changes. I try to take public transport to reduce my carbon footprint. We must use clean and renewable energy. The government must introduce laws against single-use plastics. People must be made aware of this real threat.
Il faut que nous agissions tout de suite. Sinon, il n'y aura pas de demain, ni pour nous, ni pour nos enfants.
We must act immediately. Otherwise, there will be no tomorrow, neither for us nor for our children.
Il faut que nous agissions : Subjonctif
