Tone

Definition: The tone refers to the writer's attitude or feelings conveyed through the story.

Changes in Tone:

• The tone varies throughout the novel:
  • Often amusing, childish, and innocent because the events are seen through Scout's eyes as a child.
  • In dramatic moments, the tone shifts to excited, angry, shocked, or sad.

Example of Angry Tone:

• When Calpurnia reprimands Scout for being rude to Walter Cunningham:

"Hush your mouth. Don't matter who they are ... don't you let me catch you remarking on their ways like you was so high and mighty!"

• Definition: Mood is the emotional feeling created in the reader by the story, such as happiness, sadness, anger, or indifference.
• Reader's Perspective: Reflect on how the novel made you feel – did it evoke empathy, frustration, or hope?
