Turning effect of a force about a fixed point

$M = F \times x$ where $x$ is perpendicular distance

Anticlockwise positive (+), clockwise negative (−)

Newton metres (Nm)

Total moment = 0 or clockwise = anticlockwise moments

Two equal opposite forces not acting in same straight line

$M = F \times d$ where $d$ is distance between forces

Same value regardless of which point you calculate it about

Zero moment

$M = Fl\sin\theta$
