The turning effect that a force has

$\text{Moment} = \text{Force} \times \text{Distance}$

Perpendicular distance from pivot to line of action

Clockwise positive, anticlockwise negative

Sum of clockwise moments = sum of anticlockwise moments

Eliminates unknown forces at that point
