Key features of further trig equations

Multiple angles, compound angles, double-angle identities

Double-angle identity for sin⁡2θ\sin 2\theta

2sin⁡θcos⁡θ2\sin \theta \cos \theta

Double-angle identity for cos⁡2θ\cos 2\theta (form 1)

2cos⁡2θ−12\cos^2 \theta - 1

Product-to-sum for sin⁡Asin⁡B\sin A \sin B

12[cos⁡(A−B)−cos⁡(A+B)]\frac{1}{2}[\cos(A-B) - \cos(A+B)]

When to use substitution in trig equations

For quadratic forms, e.g., sin⁡2θ\sin^2 \theta and sin⁡θ\sin \theta

General solution for tan⁡θ=k\tan \theta = k

θ=θ0+180∘n\theta = \theta_0 + 180^\circ n

General solution for sin⁡θ=k\sin \theta = k (first form)

θ=θ0+360∘n\theta = \theta_0 + 360^\circ n

When extraneous solutions arise

When squaring both sides or using certain identities

R addition formula for acos⁡θ+bsin⁡θa\cos\theta + b\sin\theta

Rcos⁡(θ±α)R\cos(\theta \pm \alpha)

RR and α\alpha in R addition formula

R=a2+b2R = \sqrt{a^2+b^2}, tan⁡α=ba\tan\alpha = \frac{b}{a}
