Describe the process of glycolysis.

Glycolysis is a series of biochemical reactions occurring in the cytoplasm of the cell. The process begins with the phosphorylation of glucose using ATP, converting it into glucose-6-phosphate. Next, glucose-6-phosphate is isomerized into fructose-6-phosphate and further phosphorylated to form fructose-1,6-bisphosphate.

The fructose-1,6-bisphosphate is then split into two three-carbon molecules known as glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P). Each G3P undergoes an oxidation-reduction reaction, producing NADH through the reduction of NAD+. Subsequently, a series of reactions lead to the generation of ATP via substrate-level phosphorylation. Finally, the process concludes with the production of pyruvate, which can enter the Krebs cycle for further oxidation.

Overall, glycolysis results in a net gain of ATP and involves the reduction of NAD+ to NADH.
