Definition:

  • The periodic table is a tabular arrangement of chemical elements, organised by increasing atomic number and grouped into horizontal rows (periods) and vertical columns (groups).

Atomic Number:

  • Elements are ordered in the periodic table based on their atomic number, which represents the number of protons in an atom's nucleus.

Groups and Periods:

  • Groups: Vertical columns in the periodic table are called groups (e.g., Group 1, Group 2). Elements within the same group tend to have similar chemical properties due to their common number of outer electrons.
  • Periods: Horizontal rows are called periods. As you move from left to right across a period, the atomic number increases, and the chemical properties of the elements change.

Predictions and Properties:

The periodic table allows chemists to make predictions about:

  • Reactivity: Elements in the same group often react similarly.
  • Physical Properties: Trends in properties such as melting point, boiling point, and density can be observed.
  • Type of Bonding: Elements on the left side of the table tend to form metallic bonds, while those on the right side tend to form covalent or ionic bonds.

Variety of Bonding:

  • Within the first 20 elements of the periodic table, you can find various types of bonding, transitioning from metallic to non-metallic as you move across the table.
