Introduction to Paper 1
Section A of Paper 1 is worth 34 marks and focuses on a Shakespeare play. These extra 4 marks are for SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar). You'll be given an extract to analyse and need to link your analysis to the wider text. Make sure that you only write about the text your school covers.
Section B is worth 30 marks and covers a 19th-century novel. You'll need to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the entire text and answer a question that requires a detailed exploration of themes, characters, or context.
Key Exam Tips for Both Papers
- Time Management: Allocate your time wisely—about 55 minutes for Section A and 50 minutes for Section B, including planning and reviewing your answers.
- Planning: Spend 5-10 minutes planning each essay. A clear structure with a strong introduction, well-organised points, and a concise conclusion is crucial.
- Alternative Interpretations: For top marks, aim to provide multiple interpretations of the text to demonstrate a sophisticated and broad understanding of the writer's purpose.
Use sentence starters like:
- "Alternatively, this could suggest..."
- "Another interpretation could be..."
- "This might also imply that..."
- Contextual Awareness: Link your analysis to the historical, social, or cultural context of the play/novel.
- Quotations: Always use precise quotations to support your analysis.
