Armed conflict between countries or groups

War fought for morally acceptable reasons in the right way

Six - all must be met

Violence only after non-violent methods exhausted

No deliberate killing of non-combatants

E.g. resisting aggression or protecting innocent people

Ultimate aim must be to bring about peace

Must have reasonable chance of success

Proportional justice - limits revenge extent (eye for eye)

First formulated just war in early Christianity

Developed systematic set of Just War criteria

Adopted in 1992 Catechism of Catholic Church
