How to answer a five-mark question (AQA GCSE Religious Studies A): Model Answers
The Structure of a 5-Mark Question:
Similar to 4 mark questions, but with the addition of a reference to a sacred writing or authoritative source to gain the 5th mark.
You need to provide two distinct beliefs or practices and develop each with explanation and detail.
The 5th mark is awarded for a clear reference to a sacred text or religious teaching (e.g., Bible, Qur'an) or a religious authority (e.g., Pope, Dalai Lama).
Steps to Answer:
1. Read the Question Carefully:
- Determine whether the question asks for two beliefs, two practices, or two ways. Ensure that you understand the topic being asked (beliefs, practices, or theme-based).
2. Provide Two Beliefs or Practices:
Belief/Practice One:
- State the belief or practice: Clearly state one belief or practice relevant to the question (1 mark).
- Explain it: Provide further detail or explanation about how this belief or practice influences or affects believers (1 additional mark).
Belief/Practice Two:
- State the second belief or practice: Provide another belief or practice relevant to the question (1 mark).
- Explain it: Provide additional detail or explanation for the second point (1 additional mark).
3. Include a Reference to Sacred Writing or Authority:
- To gain the 5th mark, you must refer to a sacred text (e.g., Bible, Qur'an) or authority (e.g., Pope, Dalai Lama) that supports the belief or practice.
- Clearly name the source and make sure it is connected to the belief or practice you are explaining. Simply quoting without identifying the source will not earn the 5th mark.
- Example: If discussing forgiveness in Christianity, refer to Jesus' teaching in the Bible about forgiveness, such as in Matthew 6:14, where Jesus says, "For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you."
Example Answer:
Question: Explain two ways Christians believe in helping the poor. Refer to sacred writing or another source of Christian belief and teaching in your answer.
Answer:
-
"One way Christians believe in helping the poor is by donating to charity, following Jesus' teaching to 'love thy neighbour.' This comes from the Bible in the book of Matthew 22:39 and encourages Christians to care for those in need." (3 marks: 1 mark for belief, 1 mark for explanation, and 1 mark for Bible reference)
-
"Another way is through volunteering for organisations like Christian Aid, which follows the teaching of helping the less fortunate. Jesus taught in the Parable of the Good Samaritan to help anyone in need, regardless of their background." (2 marks: 1 mark for belief, 1 mark for explanation)
Key Tips for Answering 5 Mark Questions:
💡 Key Points to Remember:
- Provide two distinct points: Make sure each belief or practice is different and relevant to the question.
- Explain your points: Develop each point with a short explanation or reason why the belief or practice is important to religious believers.
- Use a sacred text or authority: To gain the 5th mark, you must reference a religious source, such as a verse from the Bible, Qur'an, or a statement from a religious leader like the Pope. Make sure the reference is clearly linked to your answer.
- Be specific with your source: Merely quoting a teaching is not enough—you must indicate where it comes from (e.g., Bible, Qur'an, Pope).
