How to answer a four-mark question (AQA GCSE Religious Studies A): Model Answers
Religious Studies - How to Answer 4 Mark Questions
The Structure of a 4 Mark Question:
These questions ask you to provide two beliefs or two ways. You will need to provide two distinct points and explain each one in more detail.
There are two parts to the answer:
- Belief One (2 marks): 1 mark for stating the belief and 1 additional mark for explaining it in more detail.
- Belief Two (2 marks): 1 mark for stating the belief and 1 additional mark for further explanation.
Steps to Answer:
1. Read the Question Carefully:
- Determine if the question is asking for two beliefs, two ways, or two contrasting ways.
- For beliefs questions, consider how these beliefs influence a believer's life.
- For practices questions, explain what believers do because of their faith.
2. Belief or Way One (2 Marks):
- State the belief: Clearly state one belief related to the question (1 mark).
- Explain it: Give more details about how the belief influences a religious believer's actions or feelings (1 additional mark).
- Example: If the question is "Explain two ways Christians believe in forgiveness," a suitable answer might be:
- "One way Christians believe in forgiveness is through Jesus' teaching that people should forgive others, as in the Lord's Prayer, where it says, 'forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.'"
- "This teaches Christians to seek reconciliation with others and shows that forgiveness is important for their spiritual growth."
3. Belief or Way Two (2 Marks):
State the second belief: Provide a second, distinct belief related to the question (1 mark).
Explain it: Again, give further explanation on how this belief impacts the life of a believer (1 additional mark).
Example: Continuing from the first example:
- "Another way Christians believe in forgiveness is through the belief that Jesus forgave sinners, such as when he forgave those who crucified him."
- "This encourages Christians to forgive even when it is difficult, following Jesus' example of love and mercy."
Key Tips for Answering 4 Mark Questions:
-
Stay focused on the question: Ensure that your answer directly responds to what is being asked. Don't drift into unrelated details.
-
Use specific beliefs or practices: Always give specific examples of beliefs or actions and explain them briefly but clearly.
-
Link to the influence of beliefs: For belief-based questions, explain how the belief affects a believer's life, actions, or feelings. Use terms like "influence," "impact," or "affect."
-
Provide enough detail: Aim for one sentence to state the belief, followed by one or two sentences to explain how it works or its influence on the believer.
Example Answer for a 4 Mark Question:
Question: "Explain two ways a belief in forgiveness influences Christians."
Answer:
-
"One way a belief in forgiveness influences Christians is through Jesus' teaching that they should forgive others, as in the Lord's Prayer where it says, 'forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.' This shows Christians that they must forgive others to be forgiven by God." (2 marks)
-
"Another way Christians are influenced by forgiveness is through the example of Jesus on the cross, where he forgave those who crucified him. This encourages Christians to forgive even in difficult situations, following Jesus' example of mercy." (2 marks)
