Jane Eyre: Plot Summary
Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre follows the life of Jane, an orphaned girl who grows up in tough conditions with a cruel aunt and at a strict school. As an adult, she gets a job as a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she falls in love with Mr. Rochester. Just as they're about to marry, Jane finds out that Rochester is already married to Bertha Mason, a woman with mental health issues who's kept hidden. Heartbroken, Jane leaves but later returns after hearing that Thornfield has burned down. She finds Rochester, who's been injured in the fire, and they reconcile, getting married with a new sense of equality and love.
