The conditional (Edexcel GCSE German): Revision Notes
The conditional
The conditional is a crucial verb form in German that allows you to express hypothetical situations, polite requests, and future possibilities. It's equivalent to saying "would" in English and is essential for expressing what you might do or what could happen under certain circumstances.
What is the conditional?
The conditional helps you talk about:
- Things you would do in certain situations
- Events that would happen in the future
- Polite requests and preferences
At Foundation tier, the most important conditional form to master is ich möchte (I would like), but understanding the full system will boost your performance significantly.
Forming the conditional
The standard way to create the conditional uses the verb würde plus an infinitive. Think of würde as the German equivalent of "would" - this connection will help you remember its function.
Würde conjugation table
| Pronoun | würde form | + infinitive |
|---|---|---|
| ich | würde | spielen (to play) |
| du | würdest | fahren (to drive) |
| er/sie/es | würde | lernen (to learn) |
| wir | würden | kaufen (to buy) |
| ihr | würdet | sehen (to see) |
| Sie/sie | würden | machen (to do) |
Worked Example: Basic Conditional Sentences
- Ich würde gerne nach Berlin fahren. (I would like to travel to Berlin.)
- Er würde das Buch lesen. (He would read the book.)
- Wir würden morgen kommen. (We would come tomorrow.)
Using gern with the conditional
Adding gern or gerne to conditional sentences expresses what you would like to do, making your German sound more natural and polite.
The combination of würde + gern + infinitive is one of the most useful patterns in German for expressing polite preferences and desires.
Worked Example: Gern with Conditional
- Ich würde gern nach Europa fahren. (I would like to travel to Europe.)
- Er würde gern Geschichte studieren. (He would like to study history.)
- Würden Sie gern reisen? (Would you like to travel?)
- Was würdest du lieber machen? (What would you prefer to do?)
Wenn clauses
Wenn clauses allow you to create complex conditional sentences expressing "if" scenarios. These follow a specific structure that's crucial for GCSE success.
Critical Structure Pattern: The key pattern is: verb - comma - verb in the middle of these sentences.
Wenn + subject + verb + object, + würde + subject + infinitive
Worked Example: Wenn Clause Construction
-
Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich gerne ein Instrument lernen. (If I had more time, I would like to learn an instrument.)
-
Wenn es möglich wäre, würde ich sofort eine Arbeit suchen. (If it were possible, I would look for a job immediately.)
-
Wenn ich könnte, würde ich Schauspieler werden. (If I could, I would become an actor.)
-
Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich am liebsten in Amerika leben. (If I were rich, I would most like to live in America.)
Alternative subjunctive forms
Advanced learners can use these shorter subjunctive forms instead of würde constructions. These are based on the imperfect tense but with modified endings and are particularly useful for more sophisticated German expression.
| würde form | Subjunctive | English |
|---|---|---|
| würde sein | wäre | would be |
| würde haben | hätte | would have |
| würde mögen | möchte | would like |
| würde können | könnte | would be able to |
Worked Example: Using Subjunctive Forms
-
Ich wäre glücklich, wenn ich bessere Noten hätte. (I would be happy if I had better grades.)
-
Mein Freund würde gerne in den Urlaub fahren, wenn er genug Geld hätte. (My friend would like to go on holiday if he had enough money.)
Practice Exercise: Transform to Conditional
German to English:
- Ich fahre nach Amerika. → Ich würde nach Amerika fahren.
- Er studiert auf der Uni. → Er würde auf der Uni studieren.
English to German: 3. My friend and I would get married. → Mein Freund und ich würden heiraten. 4. She has four children. → Sie würde vier Kinder haben.
Key Points to Remember:
- The conditional expresses what "would" happen in German
- Use würde + infinitive for most conditional statements
- Gern/gerne adds politeness and preference to conditional sentences
- Wenn clauses follow the pattern: wenn + verb, würde + infinitive
- Subjunctive forms like wäre, hätte, möchte, könnte can replace würde constructions
- Watch for the verb-comma-verb structure in complex conditional sentences
