What do numbers in balanced equations represent

Ratio of moles of each substance

Formula to calculate moles from mass

moles = mass / MrM_r (or ArA_r for elements)

In Mg+2HCl→MgCl2+H2Mg + 2HCl → MgCl_2 + H_2: moles HClHCl per mole MgMg

2 moles

In Mg+2HCl→MgCl2+H2Mg + 2HCl → MgCl_2 + H_2: moles H2H_2 per mole MgMg

1 mole

In Mg+2HCl→MgCl2+H2Mg + 2HCl → MgCl_2 + H_2: moles MgCl2MgCl_2 per mole MgMg

1 mole

Calculate moles: 6g of MgMg, Mr=24M_r = 24

6/24=0.256/24 = 0.25 moles

What are mole ratios used for?

Calculate amounts needed or produced in reactions

What MrM_r represents in moles calculation

Relative formula mass

What is used instead of MrM_r for elements

ArA_r (relative atomic mass)
