Task 1: Re-creative Writing: Model Answer (OCR GCSE English Literature): Model Answers
Task 1: Re-creative Task Model Answer
Question: Write a re-creative piece based on Never Let Me Go, where Miss Lucy reflects on her decision to reveal the truth to the students. Include a commentary explaining your choices.
Re-creative Piece:
Miss Lucy stood by the window, watching the rain hammer against the glass. The truth had been gnawing at her for weeks, like a secret waiting to burst. She knew what she had done was right, necessary even, but that did not make it any easier. The looks on their faces—Kathy's, Tommy's, Ruth's—still lingered in her mind, a mix of confusion and dawning realisation.
She had tried to hold back, to protect them for as long as she could, but what good was protection when the reality of their existence was so cruel? They had to know. They deserved to know. Yet, as the words had left her mouth, she could see the spark of hope flicker and die in their eyes.
That was what haunted her the most.
Commentary:
In this re-creative piece, I aimed to capture Miss Lucy's internal conflict after revealing the truth to the students. The use of the rain as a recurring motif mirrors its presence in the original passage, symbolising the emotional turmoil and the washing away of illusions. By focusing on Miss Lucy's reflections, I explored the theme of moral responsibility and the burden of truth, which is central to her character in Never Let Me Go.
I chose to write in a third-person limited narrative to maintain a close connection to Miss Lucy's thoughts while also creating a sense of distance, reflecting her isolation after making the difficult decision. The language is deliberately straightforward, echoing the bluntness of her speech in the original passage, and the commentary on the students' reactions serves to highlight the impact of her actions, both on them and on herself.
