The entrance was near the coal-porters' stand and the men promised to keep guard and throw the students in the Liffey if they tried to cause trouble. The rooms at the Corn Exchange were perfect and there was a large meeting area which could accommodate up to a thousand people. In later years O'Connell would joke that it was the Dublin coal-porters who deserved the credit for winning emancipation.
