Politics is the process by which groups of people make collective decisions. Politics involves the activities of people who seek to influence decision-making or who hold positions of authority in society.

Political Systems

Different countries have different political systems. The main types include:

  • Democracy: A system where people have a say in how they are governed, usually through voting
  • Dictatorship: A system where one person or group has complete control over the country
  • Monarchy: A system where a king or queen is the head of state

Democracy in Ireland

Ireland is a democratic republic. This means:

  • Irish citizens elect representatives to make decisions on their behalf
  • The government is accountable to the people
  • There are regular elections (at least every 5 years)
  • People have fundamental rights and freedoms

The Irish Government Structure

The Irish government has three main parts:

  1. The Oireachtas (Parliament): Makes the laws

    • Led by the Taoiseach (Prime Minister)
    • Made up of government ministers

Citizens can participate in politics in many ways:

  • Joining political parties: Getting involved in party activities and campaigns
  • Contacting representatives: Writing to TDs or councillors about issues
  • Peaceful protest: Demonstrating for causes you believe in
  • Running for office: Standing as a candidate in elections

Rights and Responsibilities

In a democracy, citizens have both rights and responsibilities:

Rights include:

  • The right to vote
  • Freedom of speech and expression
  • Freedom of religion
  • The right to fair treatment by the law

Responsibilities include:

  • Voting in elections
  • Obeying the law
  • Paying taxes
  • Respecting the rights of others
