Pattern Symbols

Pattern symbols are markings on sewing patterns that guide you while cutting and sewing fabric:

  • Grain Line: A straight arrow showing the direction of the fabric's grain (parallel to the warp).
  • Notches: Small triangles used to match up pieces of fabric before sewing.
  • Dots and Squares: Mark points where pieces need to join, fold, or gather.
  • Seam Allowance: The space between the edge of the fabric and the seam (usually 1.5cm).
  • Cutting Line: The bold line that shows where to cut the fabric.
  • Fold Line: A solid line that shows where the fabric should be folded.
  • Darts: Triangular markings that help shape the fabric, often on skirts or dresses.

Tip: Always transfer pattern symbols onto fabric using chalk or tailor's tacks.
