Ponyboy Curtis (Narrator & Protagonist)
- Who is he? A 14-year-old Greaser who loves books, movies, and sunsets.
- Key Traits: Smart, sensitive, thoughtful, struggles with identity.
- Character Development: Learns that everyone has struggles, not just the Greasers.
- Key Quote: "I lie to myself all the time. But I never believe me." (Shows his self-doubt and emotional depth.)
Johnny Cade (Ponyboy's Closest Friend)
- Who is he? A 16-year-old Greaser, abused at home and deeply traumatised by a previous Soc attack.
- Key Traits: Timid, kind-hearted, loyal, heroic.
- Character Development: Starts as a scared boy but dies a hero, saving children from a fire.
- Key Quote: "Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold…" (His dying words encourage Ponyboy to hold onto his goodness.)
Dallas "Dally" Winston (The Toughest Greaser)
- Who is he? A hardened criminal, originally from New York, fiercely protective of Johnny.
- Key Traits: Tough, reckless, aggressive, but deeply cares for Johnny.
- Character Development: His love for Johnny is his undoing—after Johnny dies, he lets the police kill him.

Darry Curtis (Ponyboy's Older Brother & Guardian)
- Who is he? 20 years old, raising Ponyboy and Sodapop after their parents' death.

Cherry Valance (The Insightful Soc Girl)
- Who is she? A Soc cheerleader who befriends Ponyboy and acts as a bridge between the two social groups.

Randy Adderson (Bob's Best Friend & A Soc with a Conscience)
- Who is he? A Soc who questions the violence between the two groups.
- Key Traits: Thoughtful, regretful, unwilling to fight in the final rumble.
- Character Development: Learns that violence solves nothing and wants change.
- Key Quote: "Greasers will still be Greasers and Socs will still be Socs." (Shows his realisation that fighting won't change anything.)
